Desidario Alessombra

Background
Desidario Alessombra spent his formative years living on the streets of Korth. His father deserted the family soon after Desidario was born and his mother worked grueling hours at multiple jobs to scrape together enough money to feed her and her child. Then, when Desidario was nine, he awoke to find that his mother had not returned home after her night shift at a textile mill. It turned out that she had been killed, crushed when she fell into a piece of machinery at the mill. With no one to take the boy in, authorities were sent to make Desidario a ward of Karrnath. But he eluded their custody, and managed to subsist on petty larceny for the next ten years.
As the Last War escalated, Desidario joined the Karrnathi army after being apprehended for burglary and assault. The magistrate gave him the choice of imprisonment or enlistment; the sullen youth considered the army a better choice, it'd be easier to escape from. But Desidario had a talent for warfare; living amongst the dregs of society had imparted a strong sense of self-preservation and a willingness to use violence towards that end. Based on what Karrnathi military advisors called "moral flexibility", Desidario was selected for a new covert initiative. He spent the rest of the war spying on the enemy, committing acts of sabotage, participating in false-flag ambushes, and hunting down defectors and enemy spies. Desidario's unit, known as the "Ghost Wolf Battalion" ranged across Galifar: Lazhaarite ships were burned in their home ports, nobles from the Mror Holds were kidnapped and the blame placed with Aundair, Brellish agents were knifed in the alleys of Karrlakton, battle plans stolen from strongholds in Thrane.
After the Treaty of Thronehold, the Ghost Wolves were disbanded and all records of the battalion's existence were destroyed or altered to make it appear as an ordinary light infantry unit, lest Karrnath be punished for the unsavory acts they perpetrated in its name. By then, Desidario lost much of his taste for skullduggery and mustered out of the army. Ever since, he's crisscrossed Karrnath as a bounty hunter and bodyguard.

Personality
Desidario could be considered the exact opposite of a paladin: instead of absolutes, he sees a spectrum of greys. During the war, he had no problem acting in the most expedient manner to accomplish his goals, but lately he's come to realize that the means can sometimes matter as much as the end.
He knows he has a lot of blood on his hands, and he's usually pretty successful in rationalizing it away as the unavoidable cost of war. But sometimes, he also needs a stiff drink. He's not bitter about his service,but with a few year's perspective he wishes some of the things he's done he could undone.
He's trying to listen to his conscience, something he'd been trained to ignore. It's a work in progress. He tends to come off as stoic, blunt, and uncaring, but with some effort he can soften his demeanor.

Appearance
Whip-cord thin, Desidario has dark, close-cropped hair and pale blue eyes. He has a high forehead accentuated by a widow's peak and a hawk-like nose. Desidario favors dark clothing, especially a long, black overcoat. He doesn't appear to have an appreciable sense of style; his only adornments are an onyx and silver ring and a simple silver hoop through in his left ear.
